Today, machinery can be monitored and accessed through mobile phone apps, and often service centres receive automated alerts from the machinery itself as a warning in the case of a fault and these technological advances are transforming processes. Much like in healthcare, the sake of productivity and progress shouldn’t overshadow the need to make sure the network is secured at every endpoint.
While modernisation has clear advantages, it also exposes new risks. Today, it’s imperative that IT professionals have a clear view of every device in their networks, and that no element of the environment is overlooked. When something as small as an insulin pump or a single water pump has the potential to allow a cybercriminal into your network, it’s time to get visibility of every device and make sure the correct security protocols are in place.

Why HR Pros Need to Attend Oracle OpenWorld
Most companies pay lip service to the notion that “our people are our most important asset.” But only those that invest intelligently and vigorously in attracting, training, developing, motivating, rewarding, advancing, and ultimately retaining the most talented employees stand a chance in this cutthroat knowledge economy.
The fact that this year’s Oracle OpenWorld will dedicate well over 100 sessions to content that serves human resources professionals and the technologists who support them is a testament to the importance and vitality of the HR function. Oracle OpenWorld—to be held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center and surrounding hotels October 1 to 5—isn’t just the place to learn about current- and next-generation Oracle human capital management (HCM) products and services. It’s also where the HR community will come together to learn more about the future of the profession, tapping into the experiences and insights of Oracle thought leaders, partners, and customers.
Consider the gamut of HR practitioners and HCM software implementers scheduled to participate—representatives of enterprises large and small, in a range of industries.
For example, UBS will talk about its rollout of Oracle HCM Cloud across 60 countries; Xerox, across 102 countries. Cummins, the global maker of engines and power-generation systems, will discuss why and how it consolidated its talent management processes.
Family-owned ice cream maker Wells Enterprises will talk about how it revamped its HR processes and systems to keep up with rapid growth; Macy’s about how it improved the efficiency of its payroll operations; Pittsburg State University about its experience choosing, planning, and implementing a modern HCM system; investment group Dubai Holding about how it improved and streamlined the ways it acquires talent and manages employee performance; Citizens Bank about how it reduced its time to hire; and West Midlands Police about its adoption of various learning offerings.
Big Three
Central to the HR/HCM discussions at Oracle OpenWorld will be three general sessions. At the Product Now session on Monday, October 2, Oracle Senior Vice President Chris Leone will set the stage, walking attendees through the latest and greatest Oracle HCM Cloud capabilities and highlighting several key product announcements. An HCM customer panel on Tuesday will feature big thinkers and doers from Hilton, YRC Worldwide, and other top companies. And at the Product Future session on Wednesday, October 4, Oracle Vice President Gretchen Alarcon will share the company’s vision of the future of work and the role of emerging technologies in the modern HR organization.
At more intimate and focused sessions, leading Oracle technologists and partners will drill down into how a range of still-emerging technologies—including machine learning, adaptive intelligence, predictive analytics, data visualization, blockchain, and intelligent bots—will improve HR insights and change the way end users interact with HR systems. For example, the session “Predictive HCM Using Oracle’s Machine Learning and Advanced Analytics” will delve into how HCM data scientists, using Oracle Advanced Analytics 12.2, can build, evaluate, and “productionize” predictive models that anticipate employee behavior.
In other Oracle OpenWorld sessions, Oracle product leaders will take attendees through specific Oracle HCM Cloud modules: payroll, benefits, talent acquisition, workforce management, and the like. At a recurring, classroom-style HCM Hands-On Lab session, attendees will be handed an iPad loaded with the latest version of Oracle HCM Cloud and walked through its various modules, from accessing the people directory to prepare for a meeting to trying out the learning capabilities. Those special sessions are scheduled to run three times a day on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
A session titled “How Oracle’s Modern User Experiences Keep Things Simple” will detail how the themes of simplicity, mobility, and extensibility are manifested in the UX roadmap for Oracle’s HCM cloud and other cloud applications.
No HR Department a Silo
Acknowledging that companies increasingly are tying their HR applications and data to those of other departments, especially finance, Oracle OpenWorld this year will centralize all of its cloud software conference sessions—including HCM, ERP (enterprise resource planning), SCM (supply chain management), and CX (customer experience)—in one building, Moscone South.
“One of the things that’s exciting about Oracle OpenWorld is when we look at how the technologies we’re bringing to market are starting to transform people’s businesses,” Oracle’s Alarcon says. “Sometimes that story is a very specific HR practice, like recruiting or performance management, and sometimes it’s an overall business transformation story, as a company moves to a new digital way of doing work that includes HR, finance, and more. OpenWorld is a great opportunity to see the breadth of what Oracle offers as well as the depth of those individual products.”

2 Questions
In reviewing 100′s of articles on job searching questions that employers ask, I came across 2 questions that seem to hit their respective nails on the head.
What would you do differently?
How did you handle a difficult situation?
Let me provide some context for these questions before we go further. Let’s assume that most companies use a Franchise Manual or ISO Manual to document the process that they follow to complete their work. Now, following the black box theory of work .. there is input and output. What a inputs do you need to create the expected output. Given this as a content for these questions, let’s examine the black box, and answer these questions.
Black Boxes
There are many examples of black boxes. Cook books are black boxes for example. Buy 3 to 5 different black boxes and they will provide you with 3 to 5 different ways to make the same thing.
The term Black Box came about from programming and manufacturing, where raw materials were brought into the factory and turned into a car (for example). Henry Ford streamlined the process by moving cars from being produced individually, to being produced on an assembly line. The effect of which allowed people with lower educations help build cars as all they had to do was just put their piece into the car, at the right time.
In programming, the term Black Box came into fashion to help programmers describe a program that did something, but no one really understood what it did anymore, or didn’t need to. Where the factory took in raw materials, the program would take in files and command line arguments. The output would be data that was transformed. Where the factory produced cars by transforming raw materials, the program would produce a mailing list by taking in a customer data file, and a given set of zip codes. Or maybe it would merge the addresses with a form letter to generate notices that your car needs an oil change.
In business the term Black Box talks about the processes that a business uses to organize a complex business transaction. Continuing with the car model, let’s look at the process of buying a car, from the perspective of a black box. A car dealership takes in you, as a buyer. They allow you to select from any of the brands on display / sale. Once you’ve made your selection, they then ask you how you want to finance the car - cash down, bank loan, leasing options, other. Once this is arranged, then they give you the keys to your car, and send you on your way. It’s pretty simple in theory.
What would you do differently?
Many companies are afraid to ask this question. The last thing they want you to do is open up their black box, examine it’s contents, and state that you would change their business processes, because _____. But this is exactly what is needed in order to help a company understand that you don’t work in a black box, and that you are looking for innovative ways to improve not only their business model, but the whole industry.
There is a saying I follow when writing code, books, or teaching jujitsu, “Get it out first, so that you can see how it works. Then you can improve it.” Why is this important? Let’s say, you’ve never baked a cake before. It’s expected that your first few attempts will fail. If you give yourself that room, to fail, then you on the 3 or 5 attempt you will understand the process of baking cakes, and be able to start improvising / improving it.
White boarding sessions are like this. When you’re standing at the white board, trying to solve a business problem ... How would you market the new widget to an audience that’s never seen this product, or how it’s used? If you’ve ever seen the TV series, “Who’s Line is it anyways”, you can see this as an instant white boarding session. Comedians act out different skits live on stage for the audiences. The hilarity that ensues is quite entertaining. (I esp love a skit with Richard Simmons in it, where he plays a device where you put a quarter into the slot to see far away.)
So, you’ve just bought your car, you’ve just described how to market this widget to a new market segment, or you’ve just acted out a skit for the audience. What would you do differently?
The question is asked to see if you are stuck in the box, or if while you were working through this whole process you thought of a better way to improve the process. Did you?
How did you handle a difficult situation?
As the Oracle in “The Matrix” stated, “Change always is!” The Architect of the matrix was complaining that the Oracle, “Played a dangerous game!”. That she did, almost destroying The Matrix, and the machines home world, by imbuing her son with being obstinate! “I knew what I was supposed to do! But, I was compelled to ignore it.”
Aa I mentioned before, companies don’t like others prying open their Black Boxes and saying, “Here’s what I would do differently!” Especially, in the wake of just changing for the sake of changing things. A business use case / justification usually ties a cost benefit analysis to changing the process.
When Henry Ford streamlined the auto manufacturing industry, he didn’t do it because he wanted to change the industry. No, he did it, because he wanted to he wanted to sell more cars, by bringing down the cost of the car. In order to do that, he choose to leverage lower cost labor to build cars faster. This change caused a lot of people to loose their jobs, as well as a whole new segment to become employable. This change, caused a lot of emotional turmoil that was justified by a “Return On Investment”.
In most cases, when this question is asked, it’s asked from a customer service stand point. The customer came up to you and complained that the product they purchased from you was not up to their quality standards. How did you resolve the situation? Did you tell the customer that this is corporate policy? Did you refund their money and send them on their way? Did you inquire as to how the customer felt that the product could have been made better? Are there other questions or means in which you could improve this process?
Research, though, is finding that this question is a horrible question to ask, since it asks the candidate to describe the worst scenario of their daily duties and then describe how they solve the problem, if they were able to solve it at all. In most cases, the difficult situation may have been their termination over how the Black Box was designed to avoid being changed. IE .. they were being told, either do it this way and like it, or go find another job. Even, if there was a better way, and leaving was probably not the best option for them.
Final Thoughts
What these two questions are getting at, ultimately, are if you ran your own company, and had to do this process, how would you do it, and how would you improve it.
In this blog, I’ve tried to provide you with a lot of material on how companies work. The inner workings of their black boxes. Hopefully, you have been able to use this information to help you craft a better cover letter, and build a stronger case on why you are a better suited for the role they are hiring form. If, however, they don’t hire you, it’s not about you ... you were presenting a product - your argument on why you were a better candidate. Maybe they didn’t want that type of ice cream. And, there is someone else that does. That’s why Baskin Robins has 34 flavors. Not everyone likes Chocolate Chip Mint Flavored Ice Cream. Sometimes they like Pralines and Cream.
